Truly Maine
This soft cover pictorial of the State of Maine is filled with aerial photographs of the Pine Tree State from Fort Kent to Kittery. The four seasons are depicted in their colorful splendor as they can only be seen in Maine. The author/photographer has captured the true essence of the Stae's beauty. A must have for all who love Maine; both natives as well as those "from away."

It catches the spirit
This discreet unpretentoius little book is a gem. It gets a great balance between facts and info and the spirit and art of the state. A great starting point for planning a trip to the state of Maine. I was keen to find out as much about the state before my planning was too advanced and this has been an enormous help in steering toward some (apparently, not been yet so not sure) very interesting places. It is not designed to sell the state or any particular element such as hotels or dining. It does cover what it says the Spirit and the Art. A really great little book that I will treasure and return to I will also be buying others in the series!!

Manhattan Up Close: District to District, Street by Street
Published in Paperback by Natl Textbook Co Trade (March, 1992)
Authors: Fiona Duncan and Leonie Glass
Average review score:

The flavor of the city I love
"Manhattan is a machine, fuelled by the millions of people who pour through its streets and subways each day, many of them locked into an exhausting but addictive live style which makes anywhere else seem dull and slow."

Wow! The words touched an nerve. I have never seen such a succinct description of Manhattan as in this British guidebook written by Fiona Duncan and Leonie Glass.

I don't read New York City guidebooks. After all, I'm a New Yorker. I know all the places to go. I LIVE HERE. But a few weeks ago, when visiting my friend who runs a Bed and Breakfast, I picked up this little gem of a book.

Here it is. Neighborhood by neighborhood. Street by street. With the best architectural maps I have ever seen. All the basic New York City highlights are here too. But most of all, it really gets the flavor of this city that I love. And that's a big compliment.

Published in 1992, by Passport Books, it is of course a bit outdated. And there is no one book that can do it ALL, especially in a mere 144 pages. But for tourists and New Yorkers alike, this book is a treat.

Great recipes from the bounty of Maine foods.
This is a wonderful cookbook--you will almost always find just the right recipe for the occasion. If you like seafood, be sure to try Adora's Scallops or "Died and Gone to Heaven" baked Stuffed Lobster. Pasta/veggie lovers will love One-Pot Pasta. The East Brunswick Cinnamon Rolls are the best! As are the Jordan Marsh Blueberry Muffins and the Northern Maine Oatmeal Bread. A wonderful winter recipe is J. Hathaway's Italian Sausage Soup. All of these recipes were home tested once, twice or three times to give you the vesy best that the coast of Maine has to offer!

K. theodore Hoppen's The Mid-Victorian Generation
K. Theodore Hoppen's book is an invaluable resource for students and scholars of the Victorian Generation. The breadth of its scholarship is extraordinary. It is teeming with important information and provides references for further reading. The book significantly adds to the scholarship of Asa Brigg's The Age of Improvement since it considers the era after the Second reform Bill of 1867 which is crucial to understanding the direction of English history.

Mobility and Migration: East Anglian Founders of New England, 1629-1640
Published in Hardcover by Univ. of Massachusetts Press (February, 1994)
Author: Roger Thompson
Average review score:

Detailed & Readable Portrait of Puritan Colonists
Roger Thompson examines the English genealogies, biographies and careers of a large sample of Puritan colonists. Thompson finds that most Puritans, before leaving Britain, lived, worked and socialized in the same network of communities in which their ancestors had lived for many generations. Even the merchants, the most mobile group Thompson studies, were only incrementally mobile. Over years, or over generations, merchants moved town-by-town, steadily closer to London. Most Puritan colonists, Thompson asserts, would have found the move to another continent a drastic break from both their heritage and their experience.

The examination of callings, both religious and occupational, proves extremely interesting. Thompson shows how these men and women lived in England, and why they finally felt compelled to leave. Details of their lives, both personal and professional, enrich Thompson's study.

The work is a tremendous contribution to our understanding of the Puritans, in both England and America. Thompson offers a work of outstanding skill and readability.

Other works in the same field would be the section on East Anglians relocating to New England in David Hackett Fischer's Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America, and the entirety of D. (David Grayson) Allen's In English Ways: The Movement of Societies and the Transfer of English Local Law and Custom to Massachusetts Bay, 1600-1690. Thompson's work is an invaluable contribution to the study of the transatlantic Puritan community.
